A Word From The President

Welcome to the first issue of The Butler & The Chef Bistro Newsletter! While you all know my friend and business partner Joel Martin few of you have ever seen me and if you have you undoubtedly had no idea who I was. Well let me introduce myself! My name is Wayne Miller and I am the President of Oral Pleasure, Inc. the Nevada corporation formed by Joel and I to own and operate The Butler & The Chef Bistro (TB&TCB). Although I do not regularly work at the restaurant when it's open I am none the less very involved in it's operation and transformation from the former The Butler & The Chef Cafe. While Joel is very much "The Chef" I am "The Butler", handling all the things necessary to support Joel and his staff in the operation of TB&TCB. From bookkeeping, banking, permits, taxes, and marketing to restaurant construction projects, repairs, computers and networks. I'm the Webmaster, Newsletter Editor, and Event Planner.

March 1st, 2005 marked our first anniversary and to celebrate Joel and I congratulated each other, sat down to rest for five minutes, then went back to work! But it was a great year of hard work by all our staff with many successes and many hurdles, including 7 loooong months without our liquor license. 2005 has started off very well with many new and exciting things and many more yet to come. Read on!

TB&TCB Sponsors ENN in Support of World Environment Day 2005

In January we were contacted by the Craigslist Foundation and asked if we would be interested in supporting the formation of, at the request of the organizers of the upcoming "2005 UN World Environment Day", an organization to unite the city's environmental nonprofit sector into one voice. We eagerly agreed and became a major sponsor to what has become the "Environmental Nonprofit Network." TB&TCB donated catered dinners for steering committee meetings on January 27th and February 23rd and appetizers in our restaurant on March 21st. Although we are committed to do the NCCA Trade Show (a MUST DO for us) on June 1st we may again donate food at the Environmental Nonprofit Network World Environment Day Reception to be held opening day (June 1st) of WED 2005 at Fort Mason. Regardless we are proud to be an active part of this extremely important effort in San Francisco. And although TB&TCB already had a comprehensive food waste composting and recycling program in effect it was our involvement with ENN that prompted Joel to begin to phase in recycled and/or biodegradable products to replace all our disposable items. In fact, the SF Environment Department Coordinator, Alex Dmitriew, was so impressed with our recycling program he encouraged us to submit an application to be considered for the Cory Awards, an annual award given to businesses in SF for their recycling efforts.

TB&TCB Featured in April Issue of 7x7 Magazine

TB&TCB was featured in the April 05 issue of  7x7, San Francisco's Premier Magazine. In an article about South Park (where we are located) titled Southern Exposure: Playing hooky in the Park by Stefanie Michejda (pg. 50) pictures of TB&TCB and Joel's Salmon Quiche take front and center. Under the heading noon: decadent dejeuner Stephanie says:

" Leave behind brown-bagging for a day, and follow the heady smell of butter to The Butler & The Chef Bistro, which brings a touch of Paris to the neighborhood. Chef Joel Martin's French menu includes dishes such as Niçoise salad piled high with tuna and a daily quiche with fresh fillings like salmon and spinach."

"Named for the square miles of SF, 7x7 is published by a dynamic San Francisco-based publishing company, Hartle Media. The magazine is produced by a nationally recognized team of publishers, editors and artists who seized the opportunity to produce a smart, stylish magazine for a young, affluent audience. 7x7 reflects the lifestyles of as well as the attitudes and image of the new San Francisco. 7x7 delivers the most comprehensive food, design and fashion coverage in the Bay Area" - www.7x7mag.com

TB&TCB Hosts NCCA Annual Board of Directors Meeting

On April 11th TB&TCB welcomed the Northern California Concierge Association Board of Directors for their annual meeting. We were truly honored to have been selected by NCCA for this prestigious opportunity. After meeting from 4-6 pm the Directors were treated to a stylish dinner served by Chef Joel himself. In a Thank You card to Joel NCCA Director Mary DuVoure, Concierge at the Villagio Inn and Spa located in the Napa Valley, said:

"What an unbelievable evening we had last night at your restaurant. I'm still savoring the memories. It was the best french cuisine I've ever had! Your warmth and sincerity was well received."

Catellus Development Corporation Selects TB&TCB to Host
Board of Directors Dinner

Catellus Development Corporation has chosen TB&TCB to host their Board of Directors dinner in early May. Catellus is a publicly traded real estate investment trust (REIT) with approximately 40.5 million square feet of predominantly industrial rental property. Catellus is also the developer of  Mission Bay, south of King Street, in San Francisco. Mission Bay is a 303 acre redevelopment project featuring a mix of apartment and condominium homes, neighborhood retail, a Corporate, Science and Technology campus, and a new research campus for University of California San Francisco (UCSF). We are flattered and honored the Catellus Board of Directors has picked our bistro from the many fine restaurants in San Francisco and with net operating income in 2004 of $228.7 million you can bet we hope to have a long relationship with them!

Upcoming Special Events

Among the many things ahead at TB&TCB are two special events for our customers. The first, "Wild Game Night", will feature several dishes dreamed up by Chef Joel and his staff made from fresh game. Joel isn't telling but I personally know he has a thing for venison and everyone knows he likes duck. I'm curious to see what he could do with pheasant and rabbit! We hope to announce the date within a month. As always subscribers to our mailing list will receive advanced notice and a chance to make reservations before we make the announcement to the general public.

July 14th is Bastille Day. This French national holiday commemorates the storming of the Bastille, which took place on 14 July 1789 and marked the beginning of the French Revolution. We have not finalized our plans just yet but I can assure you this is a date you won't want to miss. More information in the next issue of "The Butler & The Chef Bistro Newsletter!"
